A shop called LIFE 2020

[exhibitions]

LIFE was a living room for portative works: small-scale objects and books by artists; and artworks by people who may not consider themselves artists. LIFE was concerned with the things people make that are not often given emphasis in their professional practice, rather, with the useful-everyday, small experimentations and tokens of gift-economy among fellow makers.

The project was initiated with the help of many friends. The space was housed alongside Wilfried Lentz and Cinnnamon at Keileweg 14a, in the M4H/Delfshaven area of Rotterdam.

I'll add photos of each of the shows, here, eventually.

In 2020, LIFE was  supported by CBK Rotterdam to pay fees to exhibiting artists. In 2021, LIFE received support from Gemeente Rotterdam; and Stichting Droom en Daad for exhibitors' fees and even some running costs. The use of the space was made possible through the generosity of Wilfried Lentz. When Wilfried decided to close his gallery to concentrate on other projects, Ash did the same. It was good timing.

The website - www.ashopcalled.life - is no longer online, partly because the project is fairly definitively over, and partly because after 2023 I no longer wished to give money to the site provider, nor wanted to rebuild the whole thing. But you can find it on the Internet Archive.
